Department's field of activity

The “Department for Urban Renewal and Sustainable Development” is one of the key chairs at Institute of Urban and Regional Planning (ISR) at TU Berlin. The department addresses local planning on a scale between urban design (Department for Urban Design & Urban Development) and regional overall planning (Department for Local, Regional and Federal State Planning). Furthermore there are points of contact to other departments at ISR and at Faculty VI.

In the field of urban development and renewal of settlement units many different spatial layers and typologies are taken into account. It is about cities – differentiated by size (small-, medium-, and large sized towns), districts and quarters, villages and rural spaces, agglomerations and metropolitan regions. Key functions are controlling of processes of urban extension, urban renewal and conversion and the development of planning concepts. The spatial field of activity is set in context with the basic conditions influencing space like demographic or climate change. Sustainable development is a superordinate goal for urban development and renewal of settlement units.

The department’s field of activity takes the faculty’s concept of research and the current scope of duties in planning into account. Because of the inevitable change of the critical framework of demographic development for urban and regional development, the quality assurance of the existing cities is becoming more and more important in the future.  This includes both the development of new additional structures and the progression of the existing stock as well as strategic and conceptual-coordinated dismantling according to the future of the city or region.

In teaching and research the sustainable, integrated development of the city and it’s partial spaces is in the focus of interest. The challenges of climate, demographic, social and economic change are the framework of the future spatial development. We have to develop suitable concepts and control options for a sustainable habitat.
