Young Cities - research dimensions: urban planning and design | architecture
In the research dimension of urban planning and design we developed research methods and concepts for energy-efficiency from the neighborhood scale to the building scale. By working on a pilot project, our team explored urban planning and design concepts and practical ways to transform them into applicable manuals and laws.
Urban planning and design can have a remarkable influence on climate change mitigation and adaptation since both disciplines determine spatial structures that directly or indirectly influence energy consumption: firstly, the physical dimension of urban planning and design defines urban form, which determines the heating and cooling demand of buildings and therefore directly influences energy-consumption. Secondly, the structural dimension of urban planning and design determines densities, land use patterns and transport systems that influence the distribution of goods and users. This indirectly affects the energy consumption required for transportation. Thirdly, the procedural dimension of urban planning and design manages the plan-preparation and implementation process.
These three basic assumptions formed the pillars of this research dimension that aimed at developing, implementing and evaluating approaches for energy-efficiency in the built environment. Our team investigated the impacts that the structural (i.e. land use), physical (i.e. density, compactness) and procedural aspects (procedural management) of urban planning and design have on the mitigation of climate change, with special focus on the 35 ha Pilot Project in Hashtgerd New Town.
